On July 3, 2012 Ouya was announced as a new home video game console by Boxer8 CEO Julie Uhrman.

On July 10, Ouya launched a kickstarter campaign. The Ouya Kickstarter page featured an introduction video, which explained various aspects of the console, showcased the the touchpad-sporting controller, and gave viewers a glimpse of the motherboard. It also presented the first look at the Ouya Discover Store, showing several games from Indie developers who had supported and shown interest in Ouya. The Kickstarter fundraising goal was reached in the first 8 hours. Ouya became the eighth project in Kickstarter history to raise more than a million dollars, and at the time set the record for highest first day performance of any Kickstarter project.<ref>http://www.kickstarter.com/blog/ouyas-big-day</ref>. Funding continued to increase as more models were made available at various funding levels.

On August 9, the Kickstarter finished with $8,596,475 at 904% of their goal. This made the Ouya Kickstarter the third-highest earning in the website's history.

In May 2013, Ouya received a $15 million dollar from an investment group including Shasta Ventures; Occam Partners; the Mayfield Fund; Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers; and Nvidia, the makers of the Tegra 3 chipset used in the Ouya. The public release of the console was also pushed back to June 25. On June 25, 2013, the Ouya was released to the public for $99.

On July 18, 2013, Ouya announced the Free the Games Fund to support developers making games exclusively for their system. The Free the Games Fund pledged a dollar-for-dollar raised on Kickstarter if a minimum of $50,000 was raised in return for the game being an Ouya exclusive for six months.

As of January 1, 2014, the limited edition white Ouya went off sale and cannot be found on the official store, nor any official resellers.
